IBM Red Hat Open Source Security Initiative Expands to Universities NGOs

IBM and Red Hat have expanded access to their Lightwell program for universities and NGOs, providing free access to validated fixes for open source software vulnerabilities.

The initiative aims to help institutions focus resources on research, education, and humanitarian programs by reducing the time and specialized engineering effort required to address these vulnerabilities.

Lightwell combines automated remediation with deep open source engineering expertise and contributes fixes back upstream. The program has already expanded from 6,500 to more than 8,000 validated and remediated package versions since its introduction in May 2026.

The companies have committed $5 billion to the initiative and have a global force of over 20,000 engineers working on securing the open source software supply chain. Participating institutions will receive digitally signed binaries, source code, and compliance artifacts, including Software Bills of Materials (SBOMs).
