Kush Varshney, an IBM Fellow at IBM Research, has been challenging his colleagues to rethink the fundamental principles of computing. In a series of lectures this summer, Varshney explored how disciplines such as mythology, symbolic mathematics, and media studies can inspire new forms of computer logic.

Varshney's talks have already sparked innovation among his fellow researchers, with one team building an interactive illustration of sign language for quantum computing and another applying category theory to the construction of quantum circuits.

The IBM Research community has responded enthusiastically to Varshney's lectures, with one researcher pointing out the potential application of category theory to quantum circuit development. Another researcher used Claude Code to create a visual interactive demo of a quantum-like sign language.
