IBM Sees Rebound After Execution Shortfall in Q2

IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced an execution shortfall in its second quarter, specifically in areas related to capital expenditure-sensitive software. He attributed this to a sudden shift in customer spending priorities towards AI-focused hardware components and cybersecurity-focused software.

This change led to IBM missing out on closing large deals worth double-digit numbers during the end of June, accounting for most of the shortfall. However, Krishna reported that about one-third of these deals had since been closed, indicating a possible rebound in business.

Krisha emphasized that IBM's software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, are well-positioned to help clients realize value in a secure, cost-effective, and scalable way. He pointed out that these operations power a majority of the company's high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.

The CFO James Kavanaugh added that momentum in this area is strong, with HashiCorp registering record bookings during the quarter, Confluent performing well after its first full quarter post-close, and Red Hat posting revenue growth with its OpenShift platform reaching a $2.2 billion annual run rate.
