IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced an execution shortfall in its second quarter software sales, but expressed confidence in the business's long-term prospects. The shortfall was attributed to a sudden shift in customer spending from IBM's traditional software offerings to AI-focused hardware components outside of the company's core competencies.

Krishna noted that a 'low 10s' number of large deals failed to close on time, but added that about one-third of those deals have since closed. He attributed the shift in client spending priorities to supply chain constraints and cybersecurity-focused software needs.

IBM's CFO James Kavanaugh explained that clients were prioritizing server, storage, and memory purchases 'to secure supply constrained infrastructure ahead of expected price increases.' The company has started to see a rebound, with Krishna stating that the shortfall was limited to capex-sensitive areas of the portfolio.

Krishna emphasized IBM's commitment to innovation and its ability to capture growth opportunities. He highlighted recent software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, which power a majority of IBM's high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.
