IBM Sees Rebound from Software Sales Shortfall, Focuses on AI Innovation

IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged that the company experienced a shortfall in its second-quarter software sales, specifically in capital expenditure-sensitive areas of its portfolio. This shortfall was largely due to a shift in customer spending from IBM's core software and infrastructure competencies to supply chain-constrained hardware and cybersecurity-focused software.

During the Q2 earnings call, Krishna attributed the execution issue to the company's inability to close double-digit large deals on time. He noted that about one-third of these shifted deals had since closed, which he believes indicates a deferral rather than a destruction of business.

CFO James Kavanaugh further explained that this shift in client spending priorities was driven by customers purchasing servers, storage, and memory ahead of expected price increases to secure supply-constrained infrastructure. This led to IBM missing its software sales targets.

Krishna remains confident in the company's ability to adapt to these changes and emphasized IBM's focus on AI-driven innovation. He pointed to recent acquisitions such as Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, which have contributed significantly to IBM's high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.
