IBM Software Sales Miss Due to Shift in Client Spending Priorities
IBM CEO Arvind Krishna acknowledged a 'shortfall' in the company's second-quarter software sales, citing a shift in customer spending priorities towards AI-focused hardware and cybersecurity software. This sudden change had a significant impact on IBM's results, with the company failing to close several large deals on time.
Krishna attributed the shortfall to 'execution,' stating that IBM had not adapted quickly enough to changing client needs. However, he noted that about one-third of the delayed deals have since closed, and he expressed confidence in the company's ability to grow and drive shareholder value.
IBM CFO James Kavanaugh explained that the shift in client spending priorities was driven by concerns over supply chain constraints and expected price increases. He added that IBM is adapting to these changes by increasing its use of AI to enhance software development, sales, and marketing efforts, as well as optimizing its supply chain.
