IBM Stock Options Pricing May Underestimate Future Volatility
IBM's stock price has been trading near $237, and its options market is pricing a one-year range around that from $161.75 to $348.69.
The current options pricing suggests the market anticipates moderate price swings compared to the prior year's actual movements, with an implied volatility of 38.3% trading below trailing 12-month realized volatility of 49.1%.
However, this may be too optimistic, as IBM's stock has moved harder than its options now assume over the past year.
The worry for investors is whether tens of large deals that slipped in the second quarter of 2026 were delayed or lost, which would impact the company's revenue growth outlook and free cash flow.
Management cut its 2026 revenue growth outlook to 4% to 5% at constant currency, from 5% plus in April, while keeping its target for free cash flow growth.
