IBM Strengthens Sovereign Tech Focus Amid Stock Decline
IBM is making strategic moves to strengthen its position in regulated technology sectors, even as its stock struggles. Over three days in late September, the company expanded its cybersecurity and blockchain capabilities while preparing for a crucial earnings report on October 21.
The tech giant acquired Logiq Consulting, a UK-based cybersecurity consultancy focused on defense and critical infrastructure. IBM also integrated its Digital Asset Haven platform with Swift's blockchain-based ledger to enable tokenized deposit transactions. Additionally, IBM and Marist University launched an AI research incubator powered by the IBM z17 system.
IBM Bob, the company's AI-driven software development platform, now offers a self-hosted deployment option for secure, air-gapped environments. This feature is particularly valuable for industries handling sensitive data. Meanwhile, Frank Baker, co-founder of Siris Capital Group, joined IBM's board of directors.
Despite these advancements, IBM faces investor skepticism. The stock has dropped 23-24% this year, closing at EUR 197.78 on a recent Friday. A legal review into potential securities law violations adds to the uncertainty ahead of the October 21 earnings report.
