IBM Unveils AI-Ready Strategy Amid Quantum Computing Advancements
IBM has outlined its strategy to help organizations become 'AI-first' enterprises and advance practical quantum computing. The tech giant showcased its vision for next-generation quantum computing during THINK on Tour Singapore, where company executives discussed their plans with Philippine journalists.
The discussions centered around the industry's progress toward practical enterprise applications of quantum computing, particularly in Southeast Asia. IBM Fellow and Chief Technology Officer for IBM Quantum Oliver Dial said the company remains on track to demonstrate 'verified quantum advantage' before the end of this year, referring to computing problems where quantum systems outperform classical computers under conditions that can be independently verified.
Dial highlighted the company's work with the Cleveland Clinic using sample-based quantum diagonalization (SQD), an algorithm developed for molecular simulations. Researchers simulated a protein system containing more than 12,000 atoms, producing results about 200 times more accurate than previous quantum-centric molecular simulations.
IBM executives also emphasized the importance of adopting standardized quantum-safe cryptographic algorithms to counter concerns that quantum computing could eventually break today's encryption systems. Dial said IBM does not expect quantum computers capable of breaking current encryption standards to emerge until well beyond 2035.
