IBM Ventures Backs BQP with $8 Million Investment for Operational Decision-Making
IBM Ventures has invested in Syracuse-based BQP, a physics-acceleration software company, as part of its $8 million funding round. The investment extends a relationship that began in 2023 when BQP joined the IBM Quantum Network.
BQP's quantum software aims to bridge current high-performance computing systems and future hybrid quantum-classical infrastructure. The company argues that many conventional physics solvers are limited less by raw arithmetic performance than by memory access, leaving around 85% of a GPU's floating-point capacity unused.
The company's BQPhy platform uses a physics-AI optimisation engine to expose more of the available compute through sparse iterative methods. Its QuantumNOW software is already running on customer CPU and GPU infrastructure, while QuantumMAX, a quantum-native solver still in development, is being designed for heterogeneous CPU-GPU-QPU execution.
BQP's most developed deployments are in aerospace and defence, with an SBIR project with the US Space Force and SpaceWERX demonstrating the ability to propagate a catalogue of over 3,000 space objects in under one second. The company has also demonstrated radio-frequency applications with NavalX and is applying its approach to EV battery thermal-management work funded by India's Ministry of Heavy Industries and the Indian School of Business.
