Investors looking to add technology stocks to their portfolios for 2027 face a tough choice between International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) and Synopsys (NASDAQ:SNPS). IBM maintains a strong presence in enterprise hybrid cloud and artificial intelligence consulting, while Synopsys provides critical silicon design software and intellectual property for the semiconductor industry.

IBM reported nearly $67.5 billion in revenue for FY 2025, a 7.6% increase from the prior year, with a net income of approximately $10.6 billion. The company's net margin improved to nearly 15.7%, reflecting its shift toward higher-margin software and consulting services. As of December 2025, IBM's debt-to-equity ratio was nearly 2.1x, and its free cash flow was roughly $12.1 billion.

Synopsys, on the other hand, reported nearly $7.1 billion in revenue for FY 2025, a 15.1% increase from the previous year, with a net income of nearly $1.3 billion. The company's net margin was roughly 18.9%, highlighting the profitability of specialized software licensing. As of October 2025, Synopsys' debt-to-equity ratio was approximately 0.5x, and its free cash flow was nearly $1.3 billion.

Both companies face distinct risks. IBM competes with tech giants like Microsoft and Amazon and must innovate to maintain its edge. Synopsys deals with macroeconomic and geopolitical tensions, particularly in China, and pending litigation related to its Design IP segment. Valuation-wise, IBM trades at a lower Forward P/E and P/S ratio compared to Synopsys.
