IBM's Poughkeepsie Quantum Computing Facility Clears Initial Hurdle

IBM's $2.5 billion quantum computing facility in Poughkeepsie, New York is one step closer to becoming a reality after the Dutchess County Industrial Development Agency approved a preliminary resolution for the project.

The agency voted in favor of a payment-in-lieu-of-taxes plan and sales tax exemption, which would incentivize IBM to break ground on the facility by November 2023. Eric Stavriotis, a company consultant, called this project 'the first of its kind.'

When operational, the facility is expected to create an additional 200-300 jobs, with starting salaries ranging from $68,000 to $83,000 for technicians. This would bring the total number of employees on the campus to around 3,500.
