IBM's Self-Hosted Bob Option Tackles Data Residency Concerns
IBM has rolled out an option for enterprises to self-host its AI coding agent, Bob. This allows companies like banks and government agencies to run the tool on their own infrastructure rather than relying on IBM's cloud.
The feature is designed to address concerns around data residency and security clearances. By hosting Bob on-premises or in a private cloud, clients can keep proprietary code and workflows within their control.
This is not a new product category, but an incremental deployment option for existing customers. IBM's earnings trajectory has been improving, with quarterly net income swinging from a loss to a gain over the past two years.
The move comes as the 10-year US Treasury yield remains high at 5.26%, putting pressure on corporate technology budgets. Enterprise buyers will be watching whether regulated clients adopt self-hosted Bob and how quickly this shows up in IBM's software bookings.
