IBM's Software Shortfall Tied to Execution Issues, Not a Business Problem

IBM's CEO Arvind Krishna attributed the company's software shortfall in its second quarter to execution issues, not a fundamental problem with the business. In a recent earnings call, Krishna stated that the shortfall was 'limited to a capex sensitive area of the portfolio.' He warned investors about a sudden shift in customer spending towards AI-focused hardware components and cybersecurity software.

CFO James Kavanaugh explained that IBM witnessed a 'shift in client spending priorities' at the end of June, with customers moving towards servers, storage, and memory purchases to secure supply-constrained infrastructure ahead of expected price increases. This led to IBM failing to close several large deals, accounting for the majority of the shortfall.

Krishna claimed that about one-third of the shifted deals have since closed, a positive sign that the issue was due to deferral rather than destruction. He maintained confidence in IBM's business and ability to grow and drive shareholder value.

The company is also increasing its use of AI to scale software development, bolster sales and marketing efforts, and optimize its supply chain. Krishna pointed to recent software-focused acquisitions, including Red Hat, HashiCorp, and Confluent, which power a majority of IBM's high-margin subscription-based recurring software revenues.
