ICE Detains Man Who Reported Shooting After Witnessing Incident
A Guatemalan man remains in Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody after reporting a shooting at a Home Depot store in Houston's Bellaire area.
Juan Francisco Monroy Turuy, 54, witnessed the incident and called Houston police to report it. Advocates claim that his actions as a witness should not result in ICE detention.
FIEL Houston, a community group, is urging the city council to intervene on behalf of Monroy Turuy. They are asking HPD to seek U visa certification for him, which would allow him to remain in the country without fear of deportation.
Monroy Turuy's attorneys dispute ICE's claim that he has a criminal record, stating that his prior offenses were traffic violations. Meanwhile, city council member Alejandra Salinas is calling for Houston's policy of cooperating with immigration enforcement to be reconsidered, citing concerns about punishing 'good Samaritans' who report crimes.
