Iceberg Lettuce Outbreak Continues to Spread Across US
The ongoing iceberg lettuce outbreak has resulted in 9,481 reported cases and 398 hospitalizations in the US, with two deaths confirmed. This marks a significant increase of 49.1% from eight days prior, despite the recall taking place in July.
The affected products have been recalled from store shelves but still pose a risk due to the time it takes for cases to be confirmed, which can take up to six weeks. The FDA has reported that the true number of cases is likely higher than the reported figures indicate.
Taco Bell's parent company Yum! Brands (NYSE:YUM) faces restaurant brand risk through its association with Taco Bell, while Walmart (NASDAQ:WMT) recalled affected Marketside salad items from stores. Sysco Corporation (NYSE:SYY) changed suppliers after the outbreak, switching to US-grown lettuce from Mexican sources.
