Microsoft Axes WMIC Tool After Two Decades

Microsoft has announced that it will be removing the Windows Management Instrumentation Command-line (WMIC) tool from its operating system. WMIC, which was introduced in Windows XP and has been a part of Windows for over two decades, is a command-line utility used to retrieve system information and automate administrative tasks.

With the latest Windows 11 preview update (KB5120998), Microsoft is finally phasing out WMIC, which it had previously classified as deprecated in 2024. The removal will affect both Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2, and existing Windows PCs that have not yet received the update.

For most home users, the change is unlikely to have any immediate impact, as WMIC was primarily used by administrators and power users to automate tasks. However, older management and automation scripts may be affected if they still rely directly on WMIC.
