IE Lives On: Microsoft Supports Internet Explorer Through Edge Until 2029
Microsoft's Internet Explorer (IE) may have been officially retired in 2022, but its legacy lives on. The browser's Trident engine still exists within Microsoft Edge through IE mode, which allows companies to run old internal websites and business applications that rely on IE.
Microsoft has informed administrators that they will continue to support IE mode until at least the end of 2029, providing at least one year's notice before it is finally retired. This was first announced in 2021.
Replacing a browser is relatively easy, but rebuilding a hospital system or corporate application written around decades-old web technology can take years. IE mode lets Edge open those stubborn legacy systems without forcing users back onto the defunct standalone browser.
