IE Mode Countdown Begins: Microsoft Sets 2029 Deadline for Internet Explorer Exit
Microsoft is reminding businesses and governments that Internet Explorer's IE mode won't be around forever. The company plans to support it through at least the end of 2029, but after that, users will no longer be able to access legacy websites and applications that rely on the old browser technology.
In 2023, Microsoft retired Internet Explorer on Windows PCs with a permanent update, but it left IE mode intact in its Edge browser. This was done to cater to older websites and government portals that are only accessible via Internet Explorer. However, hackers have exploited IE mode at least twice this year, including through a malicious pop-up ad.
Microsoft is urging organizations to plan their migration now, as application modernization projects can take years to complete. The company will provide 'at least one year of notice' before officially killing off IE mode, giving affected enterprises and governments some extra time to make the switch.
