Former Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger and businessman Josh Kushner have agreed to purchase the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion, according to ESPN. The sale is pending approval from the NBA Board of Governors. Iger and Kushner issued a joint statement confirming the deal, expressing their excitement about becoming stewards of the iconic franchise.
The pair praised the legacy of former Lakers owner Jerry Buss and his daughter Jeanie Buss, the current governor of the team. They pledged to build on the foundation established by the Buss family, aiming to compete at the highest level and serve the team, its fans, and the city of Los Angeles.
Mark Walter, the CEO of TWG Global, acquired a majority stake in the Lakers in 2025. In his statement, Walter reflected on his time owning the team, highlighting the community, fans, and the city's deep connection to the Lakers. He expressed confidence that the best is yet to come for the franchise.
The Lakers are set to begin their upcoming season on October 21 against the Golden State Warriors. The team will enter a new era following LeBron James' departure to the Philadelphia 76ers last month.
