Il-96-400M's Future Economics: A Calculated Scenario
According to aviation expert Oleg Panteleev, the Russian Il-96-400M wide-body aircraft is not yet on par with Boeing and Airbus in terms of operating costs. However, this situation may change as the Western fleet ages and maintenance restrictions tighten.
Panteleev notes that current Russian carriers continue to use foreign wide-body aircraft, which can maintain their airworthiness and obtain necessary components. But as these fleets age, airlines may face higher maintenance costs, making the Il-96-400M a more attractive option.
The Il-96-400M has four PS-90A1 engines, whereas modern Boeing and Airbus planes typically use two engines. This means that while the Russian aircraft has a range of 8100 km with a commercial load of 40 tons, it requires more maintenance and power plants, which can offset any potential cost savings.
However, Panteleev suggests that state support for Russian carriers and reduced kerosene prices could reduce the gap in fuel efficiency between the Il-96-400M and Western aircraft.
