IMAX Attracts Suitors with Rising Premium Format Traction
IMAX's strategic value may not be fully reflected in its stock price, according to Benchmark analyst Mike Hickey. He believes the company's premium global cinema footprint and brand equity make it an attractive acquisition target for media and tech heavyweights like Apple, Amazon, and Netflix.
Hickey raised IMAX's price target to $60 from $44 and maintained a 'Buy' rating. He stated that the company's strategic value is not fully reflected in its public market valuation, especially given its premium formats' growing popularity.
Premium large-format theatres have been gaining traction, with IMAX grabbing 16% of U.S. and Canadian ticket sales through early April. This represents a significant increase from the same period last year, when it took 13% of domestic box office revenue.
