Incheon International Airport in South Korea has embarked on its first large-scale passenger-to-freighter conversion program, a major push into the global aviation maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) market. The complex process involves cutting the fuselage of a Boeing 777 passenger jet to install a large cargo door, a highly specialized operation that requires precision and attention to detail.

The project is being managed by IKCS, a joint venture between Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Sharp Technics K, a South Korean aviation MRO specialist. The team of over 100 workers is transforming the jet from its former life as a passenger aircraft into a freighter configuration, with the aim of delivering the first converted aircraft in October.

The 'door cut' process, which involves precisely cutting away the fuselage side structure to replace the original passenger doors with an opening large enough for cargo containers, has been successfully completed. This achievement makes South Korea the first country outside of Israel to achieve this globally.
