India Cracks Down on Food Companies Over Misleading Ads and Labeling Violations
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched a crackdown on food companies for allegedly violating labeling regulations, making false claims, and engaging in misleading advertisements. Over 150 show-cause notices have been issued to prominent brands like Nestle, PepsiCo, Coca-Cola, and Abbott.
The regulator's action aims to protect consumers from deceptive information and ensure that packaged foods comply with established safety standards. The FSSAI has also taken regulatory measures against e-commerce platforms for violating food product regulations.
Twelve notices have been issued to major online marketplaces, including Amazon and Flipkart, with one case resulting in the cancellation of an Amazon warehouse's license due to regulatory violations. Products from companies found non-compliant have been seized by the authority.
In addition to packaged food companies and e-commerce platforms, popular restaurant chains like KFC, McDonald's, Pizza Hut, Domino's, and Costa Coffee have faced FSSAI action. Over 30 notices have been issued to these establishments, with five of Domino's outlets having their licenses suspended.
