Microsoft Layoff Leaves Employee Struggling with Family Obligations
A software engineer who worked at Microsoft in Hyderabad was laid off due to the company's latest workforce restructuring. The employee, who had around three years of experience, said he was the sole earning member of his family and supported his parents, contributed towards his sister's education, and helped repay a family loan.
He claimed that his manager referred to him as 'relatively young' during the layoff conversation, although he later clarified that age was not the reason for the decision. The engineer has experience in backend and full stack development, along with work on agentic AI projects.
Following the layoff, he has been seeking software engineering opportunities with technology companies, startups, and organisations in other sectors. This incident highlights the human dimension of workforce restructuring and the need for career support, reskilling opportunities, financial guidance, and empathetic communication as employees navigate an uncertain job market.
