Industrial Production Falls Short, Stocks in Sectors Take Hit
The US industrial production rose by only 0.2% in July, falling short of analysts' expectations of a 0.4% increase. This slowdown is concerning investors who fear cooling economic activity and reduced demand for manufactured goods.
The slower-than-expected growth has impacted several stocks across the industrial sector, including FTAI Aviation (FTAI), EMCOR, Caterpillar, Wabash, and MYR Group. While manufacturing output also saw a modest 0.2% increase, this is not enough to alleviate concerns.
FTAI Aviation's shares have been particularly volatile, with 43 moves greater than 5% over the last year. Despite today's big drop, the company announced earlier that it closed a $2.0 billion warehouse financing facility for Strategic Capital's second investment vehicle, which could take capacity to $3.0 billion.
The facility will fund the 2026 SPV's purchases of on-lease, mid-life Boeing 737NG and Airbus A320ceo aircraft, with FTAI performing all engine maintenance through its Maintenance, Repair and Exchange business. This news may have contributed to the stock's volatility, but it is unclear whether it will fundamentally change investors' perception of the company.
