Infantino's Governance Crisis Threatens FIFA Sponsorships Worth Billions

FIFA's billion-dollar sponsor relationships are under threat after Infantino's plan to sell a minority stake in FIFA's commercial arm sparked controversy and backlash from top-tier partners like Coca-Cola and Adidas.

The proposal, announced on July 28, would have seen a private investor group led by Thrive Capital acquire a 20% stake in the FIFA Forward Enterprise, a new subsidiary that would handle commercial and event operations for the men's and women's World Cups. However, this plan was met with immediate backlash from UEFA, which threatened to boycott all FIFA competitions unless it was pulled.

Infantino subsequently scrapped the proposal on July 30, but the dispute has left a sour taste among FIFA's biggest brand partners. Adidas and Coca-Cola have already filed cases against FIFA at the Swiss Arbitration Centre in Zurich, disputing FIFA's push to negotiate separate agreements for the revamped Club World Cup on top of their existing top-tier partnerships.

FIFA is targeting revenue of around $14 billion for the 2027-30 commercial cycle, heavily reliant on renewed and expanded top-tier deals for the 2030 World Cup. However, with UEFA's boycott still in place and sponsors pricing governance disputes as a risk factor, Infantino faces an uphill battle to restore confidence in his presidency.
