Intel's 14A Process Gains Momentum as Tech Giants Weigh Options
Intel's efforts to establish itself as a viable supplier of leading-edge chips may finally be gaining traction. According to a Piper Sandler research note, several major tech companies are evaluating Intel's 14A chipmaking process, including Amazon, Apple, AMD, Google, Tesla, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Qualcomm.
Intel has been trying to turn its manufacturing arm into a serious alternative to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for years. The company's 14A process is now the key test, with Piper Sandler stating that Intel needs to sign an anchor customer by late 2026 or early 2027 before a planned 2028 production ramp.
TSMC remains the dominant contract manufacturer for advanced chips, but its capacity is sold out through 2028. This has created an opening for other suppliers like Intel, which could justify further spending on US fab expansions with customer commitments.
Intel's Chief Executive Lip-Bu Tan has said that the company will not expand leading-edge manufacturing without clear evidence of customer demand. If it fails to land a significant external customer or meet key customer milestones, Intel may halt 14A and later process technologies.
