Interns Reveal the Secret to Turning Summer Jobs into Full-Time Offers
For those nearing the end of their summer internship, the question on everyone's mind is whether they'll receive a return offer. According to former interns from companies like Google and Tinder, there are four key tips for turning an internship into a full-time job. Firstly, interns should show eagerness to learn by asking questions and being open to feedback.
Victoria Rozanska, a former Google intern, emphasized the importance of continuous learning in her success. Ryan Stewart, who interned at Tinder before becoming a brand manager, said that leading with curiosity made people receptive to him. He advised interns to 'ask no question as wrong' and use their curiosity to connect with senior leaders.
Secondly, building relationships is crucial during an internship. Nancy Qi, a former Google intern, ate lunch with her colleagues every day to create 'team chemistry'. Stewart suggested scheduling one-on-one meetings with senior directors to learn more about the business.
Thirdly, interns should take initiative by speaking up and sharing their perspective on projects they're assigned. Taylor Wong, a former Tinder intern, said that being the Gen Z person in the room gave her an asset as colleagues actively wanted to hear from someone in that demographic.
Lastly, keeping track of work and wins is essential. Lydia Lam, who completed three Google internships before joining full-time, recommended producing 'a lot of artifacts' such as designs or projects to demonstrate skills and impact.
