Consumer-focused stocks experienced a surge on Thursday, while several artificial intelligence (AI) favorites saw declines. This shift comes as investors express concerns about AI financing and competition, prompting a rotation into more defensive consumer-centric stocks. Many of these consumer stocks have been beaten down in recent months due to worries about persistent inflation and declining consumer confidence, exacerbated by the ongoing war in Iran.
Nike (NKE) shares led the gains, jumping 5% in the afternoon after entering the day down 45% for the year. Other consumer stocks that climbed included Sherwin-Williams (SHW), Home Depot (HD), Walmart (WMT), and McDonald’s (MCD). These gains helped lift the Dow Jones Industrial Average by 1%. In contrast, AI darlings like Nvidia (NVDA) and Amazon (AMZN) saw declines.
The healthcare sector also received a boost, with shares of UnitedHealth Group (UNH) and Amgen (AMGN) each rising around 3%. This shift in investor sentiment highlights a broader trend of moving away from tech stocks towards more stable consumer and healthcare investments.
