Iran Conflict Puts Global Oil Markets on High Alert

Chevron CEO Mike Wirth has sounded the alarm on rising oil prices, warning of significant risks to global oil supply due to the ongoing Iran conflict. Speaking in August 2026, Wirth noted that the safety nets holding global oil markets together have essentially disappeared.

This lack of buffer is particularly concerning given the scale of disruption caused by the Iran crisis, which has resulted in between 6.5 and 9 million barrels per day being pulled off the market. In comparison, the supply disruptions attributed to the Russia-Ukraine war were smaller.

The Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway that handles roughly 20% of the world's seaborne crude oil, has become increasingly perilous for commercial vessels due to renewed tanker assaults and shipping disruptions.
