Iranian Leaders to Visit New York for UN Meeting Amid Ongoing Conflict
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi will visit New York next week to attend the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting. Despite a seven-month war between Iran and the US, both leaders have been granted visas by the US State Department.
The two leaders will participate in the high-level meeting of the 81st UNGA, which is being held at a time when the world is facing several major crises simultaneously. The US-Iran war, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, rising tensions in West Asia, and pressure on the global economy will be among the key issues discussed at the meeting.
The decision to grant visas to the Iranian delegation came under the 1947 UN Headquarters Agreement, which requires the host country (the US) to allow foreign representatives attending UN meetings to enter the country. However, several restrictions will remain in place for the Iranian officials, including limited movement and a ban on purchasing luxury goods.
The visit is being viewed as a potential opportunity for dialogue between the two countries. US President Donald Trump has previously claimed that talks have taken place between his administration and Iranian officials.
