IREN Secures $14 Billion Funding for AI Cloud Infrastructure Push with Microsoft Partnership
IREN Limited has made significant strides in its pivot from Bitcoin mining to AI cloud infrastructure. With a cash balance of $7.6 billion, including restricted funds, and committed GPU financing and customer prepayments providing an additional $14 billion of funding capacity, the company is well-positioned for growth.
The first major proof point of this new direction has been achieved with Microsoft Corporation accepting the first Horizon deployment under a multiyear arrangement in August. IREN is redirecting its sites, capital, and staff towards AI cloud infrastructure, aiming to deliver 300 megawatts of IT load in 2026 and 800 megawatts in 2027.
Microsoft's involvement supports the bull case for IREN, as a large customer can improve financing terms and utilization visibility. However, schedule risk, equipment lead times, and rising project costs remain concerns.
Hedge funds have moved aggressively into IREN, with Insider Monkey's database showing 69 holders in Q2 2026, up from 53 in Q1. Value Aligned Research Advisors increased its position by 78% to about 8.47 million shares.
