Itsekiri Protesters Demand Better Representation at Chevron

Vivian Eric Mene, president of Voice of Warri Kingdom Women Initiative (VWKWI), has apologized to leaders in Ugborodo Federated Community for a planned protest against Chevron Nigeria Limited. Mene explained that the protest is intended to benefit the Itsekiri Nation.

The planned protest follows the employment of 18 staff by Chevron, none of whom are from the Itsekiri Nation. This comes despite the company having trained 32 qualified Itsekiris in the past under a program known as VTP (although no details on when this occurred are given).

Mene stated that Chevron is not taking the Itsekiri Nation seriously and that the community has been suffering due to a lack of opportunities. The protesting Itsekiri women carried banners with messages such as 'Itsekiri comes first for top positions' and 'Chevron give Itsekiri people the right they deserve.'
