J&J to Sell Orthopedics Unit for $20 Billion
Johnson & Johnson is planning to sell its orthopedics unit, DePuy Synthes, for $20 billion. The company announced plans to spin off the business in late 2025 and began discussing a sale with private equity firms in early 2026.
Apollo Global Management is reportedly considering buying the division, which makes products such as joint replacements. Selling DePuy Synthes will allow Johnson & Johnson to streamline its operations and focus on higher-margin businesses.
The move is part of the company's strategy to become a leaner, more profitable business with a faster growth profile. By selling DePuy Synthes, Johnson & Johnson can free up cash for other purposes, such as stock buybacks or debt reduction.
