J&J vs AbbVie: Dividend Yield Showdown in Healthcare

Instruments
JNJ

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) and AbbVie (ABBV) are two healthcare giants with distinct dividend stories. J&J, a Dividend King with 64 consecutive years of raises, offers a modest 2.02% yield, while AbbVie pays a higher 2.78%, funded by its biopharma engine.

JNJ's Q2 earnings report showed broad growth, with worldwide sales reaching $25.3 billion and Innovative Medicine growing 6.8%. TREMFYA crossed $2 billion in revenue for the first time, up 71%. DARZALEX pushed past $4 billion, while new launches ICOTYDE and INLEXZO are gaining share fast.

AbbVie's quarter was tighter but punchier, with revenue reaching nearly $17 billion, up 10.2%. Skyrizi at $5.5 billion (up 24%) and Rinvoq above $2.5 billion led the growth, while Humira fell 36.1% to $706 million.

J&J CEO Joaquin Duato called the company 'one of the most compelling and transparent growth stories in healthcare today,' citing 28 products and platforms each doing more than $1 billion. CFO Joe Wolk emphasized the commitment to returning capital directly to shareholders, primarily through the dividend. Free cash flow is tracking to roughly $21 billion for the year.

AbbVie, on the other hand, is playing offense with its $10.9 billion Apogee Therapeutics deal, adding long-acting biologics for atopic dermatitis and respiratory disease. CEO Robert Michael framed it as fuel for the 2030s: 'AbbVie's long-term outlook remains very strong.' However, this comes with a negative book value and a trailing P/E near 69.
