James D. Yates Remembered for Faith, Family, and Service
James D. Yates, known affectionately as Jim, passed away on October 1, 2026, at the age of 76, following a battle with a terminal illness. Born on December 21, 1949, in South Bend, Indiana, Jim was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Yates, daughter Michele Post, granddaughter Adelynn Rae Post, and several siblings and extended family members. Jim's life was marked by service, both to his country and his community.
After graduating from Riley High School, Jim attended Western Michigan University and served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. His career spanned several decades, starting at Armco Steel and later at Bendix Brake and Strut, which evolved into Allied Signal and ultimately Honeywell Corp. He retired from Honeywell in April 2007 but continued working part-time at the University of Notre Dame's Heisburg Library until moving to Texas in 2015.
Jim was known for his love of country western music, golf, and euchre, particularly his pride in calling a 'loner.' He took great joy in maintaining his yard, even winning 'yard of the month' in his Texas neighborhood. His faith and family were central to his life, and he was an active member of Southgate Church in South Bend and The Crossing Church in The Woodlands, Texas.
A visitation for Jim will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Southgate Church, followed by a funeral service and burial at Southlawn Cemetery in South Bend, where military honors will be rendered. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to Southgate Church or the Nantz National Alzheimer Center in Houston.
