Jensen Huang Faces $8 Billion Tax Bill if California's Billionaire Wealth Tax Passes

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang could face one of the largest personal tax bills in California history if voters approve Proposition 40, a new billionaire wealth tax. According to estimates, the tax could cost Huang roughly $8 billion.

The tax would be imposed on billionaires who were California residents as of January 1, 2026, and would require them to pay a one-time tax equal to 5% of their covered wealth above the threshold. The levy would be due in 2027, although taxpayers could spread payments over five years at additional cost.

Huang's potential liability is a consequence of Nvidia's extraordinary appreciation. The company's market value climbed to roughly $5.6 trillion this year, adding about $1.3 trillion in value in only a year. Much of Huang's personal wealth comes from his Nvidia ownership, meaning the wealth tax would capture gains that largely exist in stock rather than salary or cash income.

Huang has taken a different position on the proposal, saying he is comfortable paying high California taxes and encouraging others to remain in the state. His stance stands out partly because Nvidia itself has become one of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI investment boom.
