JioHotstar Brings Bollywood to Global Screens
Disney's international streaming plans have taken a major shift as JioHotstar has launched in the UK, Canada, and Singapore. This marks the replacement of Disney's existing streaming service, Hotstar.
JioHotstar offers premium Indian entertainment, including TV shows, films, regional programming, non-fiction, kids, and anime. The platform is designed to appeal to both the South Asian diaspora and a broader global audience seeking diverse stories and cultures.
Disney acquired Hotstar as part of its purchase of 20th Century Fox in early 2019. However, after rebranding Disney+ Hotstar in India, which delivered tens of millions of new subscribers globally, Disney agreed to merge JioCinema with Disney+ Hotstar to create JioHotstar.
As a result, changes have been made to how Disney+ operates in many countries worldwide. In some regions across Asia, Europe, and South Africa, a different version of the Disney+ app was used, known as Hotstar X, which will now be migrated over to the same version used elsewhere.
