JNJ Stock Tumbles on Slowing Growth and Valuation Worries

Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) has been on a tear, rewarding investors with a 53% return over the last twelve months. However, the pace of this rally has suddenly slowed, with the stock slipping roughly 4% from its multi-year high of $278.43 set earlier this month.

The company's operating margin is comfortably above the S&P 500 median, at 27%, and its operating cash flow margin is also higher than the market's median, at 28%. The primary driver of Johnson & Johnson's success is its Innovative Medicine division, which has seen blockbuster drugs like DARZALEX grow close to 18% in sales.

Despite this growth, there are concerns about the company's valuation. With a price-to-earnings multiple of 30.6 and a price-to-sales multiple of 6.6, Johnson & Johnson trades at a premium compared to its peers. Additionally, the company continues to navigate persistent talc liabilities and has faced operational drags in its MedTech segment.

The question now is whether the pharma engine can outrun the MedTech drag. Management has raised full-year guidance, expecting operational sales growth for 2026 to land in the range of 6.5%-7.1%. The next quarterly report will be a crucial test of whether this runner still has room to go.
