Jobs vs. Gates: A Tale of Two Tech Titans

Despite their long-standing rivalry, Microsoft and Apple co-founders Bill Gates and Steve Jobs had a complicated relationship that went beyond just business. A 1995 interview for PBS's Triumph of the Nerds documentary series revealed some candid comments from Jobs about Microsoft's early success, which he attributed to IBM's decision to use MS-DOS on its PCs.

Jobs called Microsoft's business 'well deserved,' but criticized the company for lacking originality and prioritizing profits over user experience. He famously said that Microsoft had 'no taste' and that their products were 'very pedestrian.' Gates, however, responded by saying that Jobs should have experimented with hallucinogenic drugs to make Microsoft products more appealing.

Years later, in 2010, Gates downplayed the potential of Apple's iPad, calling it a 'nice reader' but nothing more. However, the device went on to become a major success, selling over 300,000 units on its launch day and surpassing 10 million sales within its first year.

Microsoft eventually responded by launching the Surface lineup in 2012, which has since established itself as a strong competitor in the tablet market. Today, Apple's iPad continues to be a major source of revenue for the company, with sales bringing in over $6.2 billion in the latest quarter.
