JPMorgan Chase Leads Banking AI Rankings for Fourth Year
JPMorgan Chase has secured the top position in a global assessment of banks' AI capabilities for the fourth consecutive year. The research, conducted by Evident AI and reported by American Banker on Oct. 6, evaluated 50 major banks across four key areas: AI talent and innovation, leadership, and transparency. Capital One and Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) held the second and third spots, respectively.
JPMorgan Chase's success was attributed to its extensive AI infrastructure, which spans 22 business units and 10 functions. Alexandra Mousavizadeh, co-chief executive of Evident AI, highlighted the bank's ability to integrate AI across diverse operational areas. Capital One excelled in AI talent and innovation, while RBC demonstrated strength in platform building and AI implementation across business units.
The report noted a growing trend among top banks to focus on building robust guardrails and control systems for safe AI operations. Banks are also optimizing costs through 'dynamic model routing,' which selects appropriate AI models based on task requirements. Evident AI reported a 21 percent increase in support staff developing AI control and management tools.
There were notable shifts in the rankings, with Wells Fargo rising to fifth place, Bank of America climbing to seventh, and Citi moving up to eighth. Morgan Stanley, however, slipped from fifth to ninth. Leading banks are leveraging AI to enhance revenue and operational efficiency, particularly in corporate customer onboarding and investment banking research. Smaller banks are advised to focus AI efforts on areas where customers experience significant inconvenience, rather than competing on investment scale with larger institutions.
