JPMorgan Leads Push for US Grid Modernization Amid Rising Power Demands
JPMorgan is leading a push for grid modernization as part of its biggest participation in New York Climate Week, according to Heather Zichal, global head of sustainability at the bank. The team plans to engage over 100 clients and emphasize the need to finance grid upgrades throughout the week. Zichal stated that 'access to power increasingly shapes where companies invest, grow, and compete,' making grid modernization an economic competitiveness imperative.
The US power network is facing strain due to rising power demands from data centers, cooling loads, new manufacturing, and electric vehicles. The bank has previously flagged the aging grid as a national security concern. Last year, JPMorgan unveiled a $1.5 trillion program focused on strengthening US infrastructure.
JPMorgan teamed up with RMI and other partners to form the Great American Grid coalition, which has released a report highlighting the need for grid reforms. The report notes that utilities expect an extra 166 gigawatts of peak demand over the next five years, compared to 24 gigawatts in 2022. Discussions have focused on speeding interconnection, expanding transmission, and preparing for next-generation technologies.
