JPMorgan Pledges $750 Billion for Affordable Housing Push
JPMorgan Chase has pledged to invest a massive $750 billion through 2035 in an effort to help millions of Americans purchase homes. The bank's 'American Dream Initiative' aims to build or preserve 1 million affordable housing units and support half a million customers, including 200,000 first-time homebuyers.
The initiative will see JPMorgan ramp up mortgage lending by over 40% and hire 850 new Home Lending Advisors. The bank has also carved out funding specifically for housing projects in the San Francisco area that are priced within reach of middle-income households, including nearly $200 million in financing for a 342-unit building on the waterfront.
JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon has long been vocal about the issue of housing affordability, particularly in cities like New York City and San Francisco. The median price of existing homes reached a staggering $440,660 in June, while the median age of first-time homebuyers last year jumped to 40, the highest age on record.
