JPMorgan Slides as Traders Flock to Tech Amid AI Shopping Agent Concerns
JPMorgan Chase shares are falling as investors rotate into technology stocks amid concerns that artificial intelligence shopping agents like Meta's Muse could disrupt traditional payment and financial companies.
The stock is giving back ground after a steady climb through the summer, now retreating from its peak in August due to technical resistance. This weakness stands out against an otherwise positive session for the Nasdaq, which added 0.52% on Tuesday while the S&P 500 remained nearly flat, down just 0.03%.
Part of what's weighing on shares may also be investors recalculating how this week's rate increase will flow through to banks' net interest income going forward.
The broader financial sector is having an even tougher session, sitting at the bottom among S&P sectors and down 1.89% on the day, despite a 2.11% gain over the past three months. JPMorgan is actually trailing that already-struggling group by 1.5 percentage points.
Deals linking Meta's Muse AI agent to e-commerce and checkout systems have investors questioning whether these agents might eventually cut traditional financial middlemen out of the picture, fueling concerns about the role of companies like JPMorgan in how consumers pay for everyday purchases.
