JPMorgan Sounds Warning as AI Stocks Unravel

The market's recent rally may be masking an underlying shift in leadership and conviction that could signal trouble ahead, according to JPMorgan Chase & Co.

Technical strategist Jason Hunter argues that while major benchmarks remain near recent highs, the foundation of the rally is less secure than it appears. A multi-week pullback has interrupted a string of weekly advances, which Hunter sees as more than just a routine pause.

The trigger for this potential downturn, in JPMorgan's view, is not economic data but rather the slow unraveling of conviction in artificial intelligence stocks, which have powered much of this year's gains. This shift is occurring at a time when seasonal patterns are historically unfavorable, and Hunter notes that the market's weakest stretch typically occurs during late summer and early fall.

Hunter reads the current move away from AI and broader technology names as a lack of conviction, rather than a fresh economic bet. Unlike prior rotations, this one lacks confidence, with capital leaving tech flowing into more defensive corners of the market. Hardware and hyperscale computing stocks also tell a similar story, moving unevenly as investors question the payoff timeline on aggressive spending.

JPMorgan's sharper warning rests on a historical parallel between the AI trade's trajectory and the run-up to 2000, when tech stocks surged for years before collapsing and dragging the market into a prolonged downturn. Hunter notes that none of this guarantees a repeat, but as trading enters a period historically prone to volatility after Labor Day, he treats the parallel as a risk worth taking seriously.
