JPMorganChase Executive Marianne Lake Retires Amid Success and Surprise
Marianne Lake, former CEO of JPMorganChase's consumer and community banking unit, surprised investors and her staff by announcing her retirement in late June. Just two weeks prior, she had been discussing the success of her team at an investor conference.
Lake led a major expansion of the consumer bank under her leadership, including new branches, upgraded card offerings, airport lounges, and more. The unit reported net income of $18.2 billion in 2025, up 4% from the previous year, with a return on equity of 32%. First quarter 2026 earnings were up 12% over the same period last year.
Lake's exit was met with surprise, but some industry experts believe she may not be finished yet. Ebrahim Poonawala, head of North American bank research for Bank of America Securities, notes that her track record could make her a good fit for a big technology company.
