JPMorganChase Pours $400 Million into Affordable Housing Solutions
Housing affordability is a major issue in the US, with 22 million households spending more than half their income on rent or mortgages. JPMorganChase, the nation's largest multifamily lender and residential bank mortgage lender, is using philanthropy to help address this problem.
The firm has invested $400 million in philanthropic capital since 2021 to support innovative housing solutions that increase affordable housing supply and access to homeownership. This investment has helped create or preserve over 100,000 affordable rental and for-sale homes, support 15,000 first-time homebuyers, and attract an additional $2.1 billion to advance housing initiatives.
JPMorganChase is also supporting innovative construction methods that can reduce costs and delivery times by up to 20%. Off-site construction, which involves building components in a factory and assembling them on-site, is a promising approach. The firm has invested philanthropic capital in off-site construction projects, including one with Hacienda Community Development Corporation in Portland, Oregon, which is using mass timber modular homes.
The company's executive director of housing access and affordability, Laurie Schoeman, said, 'Innovative homebuilding techniques help to lower costs and shorten timelines, delivering more affordable homes at a lower price. Philanthropy has the power to support early pilots, help fill funding gaps, and scale what’s proving effective.'
JPMorganChase is using philanthropy in four key ways: testing innovative construction methods, increasing production capacity and scaling successful approaches, expanding access to flexible financing, and strengthening the ecosystem through public-private partnerships.
