Judge Dismisses Penske Media Lawsuit Against Google Over AI Search Summaries

Penske Media Corporation's lawsuit against Google over AI search summaries of news articles has been dismissed by U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta.

The lawsuit, filed in 2025, alleged that Google is unlawfully leveraging its search engine by only including publishers that permit the use of their articles in AI summaries in its web search results.

PMC argued that this practice has depleted clicks into their ad- and subscription-supported reporting, resulting in lost revenue.

In his ruling, Judge Mehta stated that antitrust laws do not apply to the AI overviews of news stories provided for articles searched on Google.
