Kauai Residents Scramble as Hurricane Lowell Nears

Kauai residents are bracing for the impact of Hurricane Lowell, which is expected to make landfall on the island in the coming days. The storm's forecast track has it passing just west of Kaua'i and Ni'ihau, prompting a Hurricane Watch and Tropical Storm Warning for both islands.

As residents prepare for the worst, stores across Kaua'i are running low on emergency supplies. Albert Johnson, manager at the Garden Island's only Home Depot in Līhuʻe, described the scene as 'a madhouse' with customers buying out generators, tarps, and other essentials.

Randy McCabe, a resident who was shopping at Costco, expressed urgency to get ready for the storm. 'Make sure we get the water going, batteries,' he said. 'Just be prepared, get ready, be hunkered down, tie up everything.'

For some residents, like Nouveau Naumu, preparation is driven by personal experience with previous natural disasters. Naumu was 10 years old when Hurricane Iniki devastated the island in 1992 and remembered the high winds and debris.
